CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Lucy
‘Sorry. Run that past me again. My brain is about to explode.’ Dee patted her pockets then started opening kitchen cabinets.
I wrapped my cardigan around my body to warm up. The house was boiling hot; Dee always had the heating on, but I couldn’t stop shivering. I started to pace, my Converse catching on the wheels of one of the kids’ scooters propped up against the fridge.
I had just left the hospital and Ade had taken my place. Usually, when Ade is there I find it hard to look at him, because he makes me long for Luke so badly, but today I was glad of his presence, and it was Luke I could hardly look at. I didn’t know what to think or what to say. If it was true that coma victims could hear what was going on around them, he had just spent a boring few hours with me as I sat tightly in silence, trying to make sense of the hideous thoughts in my head.
‘Haven’t you got any vodka? Or some wine?’ I sniffed, wondering if I was about to cry again. Christ. The chat with Stella had hit me harder than I thought it had.
‘Yes. Wine. Quicker.’ Dee opened the fridge and rooted around. ‘Pinot, only about a week old.’ She splashed some into brightly coloured plastic tumblers that clearly belonged to the children, not bothering to search out clean glasses. Her tone was breezy, but I could tell that she was wrong-footed and searching for sanity. It was just her way of dealing with a crisis; it was what Dee did.
‘Okay. So let me get this straight. You’re saying this woman, this Stella, just bowled right up and told you she was having Luke’s baby?’
Dee didn’t believe it; that much was obvious.
I gulped the wine and carried on pacing. ‘She didn’t bowl up, no. I saw her outside the hospital and I asked her to come and speak to me.’
‘What the hell did you do that for?’
‘Because I’ve got a death wish. Because I’m a bloody idiot and I can’t leave well enough alone.’ I could feel my cheeks darkening. From the wine, from the fury or maybe from both. ‘I don’t know why I did it, Dee. I wish I hadn’t. I wish I could go back to just feeling totally cut up about Luke being in a coma, rather than feeling utterly devastated that some other woman might be having the baby I couldn’t seem to give my husband. It’s just too awful. I want him to be okay … I want us to be ok.’ I slammed the plastic tumbler on to the worktop and burst into tears.
Dee’s arms were round me before I could take a breath and she radiated concern. ‘Darling, I’m so sorry. You’re going through hell. The universe has dumped you right in the middle of a shit storm.’ She drew back, still holding me.
‘Look, is there any chance she’s lying about the baby? About her and Luke?’ Her eyes flickered; she was contrite.
